Car Dealer

A stapled price-list flutters from his hand
Whose welcome forfeits family, sleep and health
To make the sale. With doors unlocked, his cars
Display their contents to the street, their past

Wiped out with a car shampoo and the team
Of boys whose galvanised buckets have turned
Their work to froth. The dealer demonstrates
Plastic seats, the engine clocked and silent.

Oil cans, cash and business cards, receipts.
The sales girl in the window counts the cash;
And makes, in well-filled jeans, her hair pushed back
A breath that lasts till dawn upon the glass.
